This is a continuation of my conversation with Christian about the four basic bible study tools that we use when studying the Bible. Join us to complete the discussion of the strategies that you can use no matter where you find yourself in the Book of Life.
Word Analysis - A detailed examination of the words that compose the text.
Why you do it: The words that compose the text can provide guidance into the important ideas of the passage and can arouse interesting questions concerning the truth throughout the passage. Meanings behind words can be profoundly helpful in understanding the meaning of a text.
How you do it: Identify unexpected, repeated, and important words, phrases, and ideas throughout the text. Look for groupings to see a theme and look for changes to see a transition. Ask questions as to why certain things are included or excluded and research meanings of unknown or important words for a better understanding.
Inquiry - Asking genuine questions that lead to more information.
Why you do it: Searching for information through the form of questions engages your mind with the text and makes connections and discoveries. The act of asking questions should be done regularly to become habitual.
How you do it: Start with a set number. Be genuine and look at the details, words, and transitions. Ask why? Do NOT investigate immediately, and it is ok if you cannot find an answer to your question!
Connections - A relationship in which a person, thing, or idea is linked with something else.
Why you do it: The Bible is a whole body of truth and connections run throughout it. The Bible is practical and should be connected to the world around us. The Bible is applicable and should be connected to our own lives.
How you do it: Search for connections with other texts, the world, and yourself. Are there quotes or allusions to other books or chapters? Be careful with applications!! Everything is profitable, not directly applicable! (Ex. Being the avenger in the OT)
Comprehension - The capability of understanding something.
Why you do it: Any nuggets of truth in a passage must be a part of the overarching truth in the passage. If you do not understand what the passage is saying, it will be hard to understand the parts within the passage.
How you do it: Draw a picture of the passage because you cannot draw something if you do not understand it. Do not try to draw too big a passage because you need to incorporate everything in the drawing. Give a title (5 words or less) to each picture. A connected series of these pictures become an outline.
